Briefings and debriefings

Video example

There are no hard and fast rules about what constitutes a good briefing or debriefing.

This short video is just one example of how it is done by one team in one hospital and is intended to stimulate discussion amongst teams locally. The approach depicted was developed to by the team to fit their local circumstances and has been adapted through practice using a number of Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles

The list under discussion is fictious although the content is based on real cases that would make up a typical operating day for the team. It is noted that the Junior Doctor who would normally be part of the team is absent from this example. This was due to unforeseen operational reasons on the day of filming.

An example of the adapted Briefing, Checklist and Debriefing documentation used by this team is available in the community section of this site. You will need to register access.

We hope that you find the film useful.
