One step for patient safety

Small steps to change

Patient Safety First developed several activities during its mini campaigns which Trusts could take part in and that supported patient safety improvement across many different clinical areas. We have rebranded all these activities as 'One step to patient safety' and collated them here as a resource for Trusts and organisations delivering care to use in their patient safety improvement work,

These activities are designed to involve minimal preparation and should not been seen as a new project. They are very simple actions that frontline clinicians and managers can quickly get involved with and most importantly should help to support and build on improvement work that you are already doing.

Evidence shows that taking even very small steps to change practice can make a really big difference. Making changes that have been tried and tested on a small scale for instance on one ward, or on one day means that they are much more likely to spread and in a way that can be sustained over time. Trying to change everything overnight is often a daunting and resource-hungry place to start - this is why Patient Safety First encourages taking small steps to get started.
